Do Mobile Phone Signal Boosters Really Work?
Mobile Signal Boosters Explained
Mobile phone signal boosters are a very powerful and effective piece of kit. Ofcom only agreed to licence previously unlawful mobile phone signal booster products in 2017. This means licenced companies such as Mobile Repeater can sell 3G and 4G repeater amplifiers to customers who don’t have usable mobile signals at home or at the office. But do mobile phone signal repeater kits work?
Mobile signal isn’t always as strong as we would like. You are generally OK if you live in a city or urban area, as this is where most mobile masts are located. But once you enter a rural area, well away from motorway antennas and masts, signal tails off. It is also a problem indoors, especially in older buildings with thick walls. If you have ever had to spend 20 minutes wandering around indoors, or climbing a hill outdoors just to find a signal you can use to make a call or send a text, you’re not alone.
The big four mobile network operators have invested millions in improving and upgrading their networks, but none of them can boast 100% coverage, and even in areas where there is strong coverage, this doesn’t extend to indoors.
Advantages Of A Signal Booster
A mobile signal booster is a handy piece of kit in a technological age where sending text messages, streaming live sports, or making calls is considered an essential part of everyday life. When your connectivity dies, you are out of the loop.
How Does a Mobile Booster Work?
A phone signal booster kit comes with an outdoor antenna, which picks up the network’s signal. They work with the four main networks: EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three. The antenna relays the signal to an indoor mobile signal booster. This signal booster relays it to an indoor antenna, which acts as your personal mobile mast.
How Effective is a Mobile Booster?
A mobile repeater takes an existing signal, removes any interference, and amplifies it, in much the same way as noise-cancelling headphones eliminate background white noise. The resultant signal will be stronger and more consistent, so you shouldn’t have to endure dropped calls or ‘your message failed to send’.
However – and this is important – a mobile booster can’t perform miracles. If you have no signal whatsoever, a phone booster can’t summon one up out of the ether. It will only work with what you already have.
The best way to check whether a 3G or 4G signal booster is going to make a difference is to check the strength of your existing signal. Test all areas. If you only have one or two bars, a mobile repeater will make a big difference. If you have no bars at all, a 3G or 4G booster can’t help. If you do have zero signal, try switching to a different network.
